Equipment Operator - Kearny NJ

Position Overview

Insure safe, efficient and proper operation of heavy construction equipment to lift and transport materials to and from storage or processing areas, to feed conveyors, hoppers, chutes, and to load trucks or rail cars.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Ability to operate various pieces of heavy equipment including loaders, excavators, dozers, hammers and haul trucks.
  • Perform daily pre-shift procedures
  • Communicate with and cooperate with truckers and customers as required
  • Performs equipment maintenance on a routine basis, i. e., lubrication, fueling and cleaning of loader
  • Wear a hardhat, safety glasses, steel-toed footwear, gloves, hearing protection and respirator as needed


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.


  • High School or GED
  • Successful completion of MSHA / OSHA training
  • Task training on as needed basis

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Thorough operational knowledge and skills of specific equipment to be operated
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment safely and efficiently
  • Ability to service the assigned equipment to ensure maximum operating efficiency
  • Ability to carry out simple oral and written instructions and deal with simple problems
  • Basic Mathematical skills
  • Able to perform all duties without a direct threat of injury to the individual or others
  • Ability to use operator s manual
  • Demonstrates safe, productive job performance
  • Ability to communicate effectively with and work well with other personnel
  • Ability to read English or Spanish

Work Requirements:

  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and company procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, as required
  • Must be flexible and able to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature depending on priorities. Ability to multi-task is essential.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated areas as stated by OASH and MSHA
  • Protective equipment that maybe required, but not limited to, this position is: Face Shield, Safety Glasses, (hard toe) Shoes, Dust mask and Hearing Protection.
